COGNOS Report Project

As of September 2016, the COGNOS Strategic Financial Reporting project has successfully completed individualized unit training sessions for the deployment of the first two reports — the Profit & Loss Statement, which contains the FY16-17 budgets under the New Budget Model, and the Consolidated Financial Performance Report, intended to project unit performance on an annual basis.  The project team will now focus on evaluating/assessing the recommended changes prompted during the sessions.

Toward the end of October 2016, two more reports will be available for training and deployment, the Organization Budget Report and a management level Contract & Grants report.

The purpose of the COGNOS Report Project is to provide decision makers at all levels of UCR with accurate, concise, clear and well-structured information in order to align decision-making with UCR goals and objectives. COGNOS reporting will relieve the pain points associated with the current reporting system, offering the critical data needed for leadership decisions in a format tailored to the specific needs and interests of individual campus leaders. The initial COGNOS reports will house the FY16-17 budgets under the New Budget Model and will be available in summer 2016. The majority of campus reports will be then be validated and prioritized through summer 2017.

Story/Background

The purpose of the COGNOS Report Project is to provide decision makers at all levels of UCR with accurate, concise, clear and well-structured information in order to align decision-making with UCR goals and objectives.
Following extensive engagement with leaders across campus, the following pain points of the current reporting systems were identified:
  • Long time to prepare
  • Lack of reporting tools
  • Access to appropriate and modifiable format of data
  • Time to interpret and analyze reports
  • Lack of analyzed information for decision making

COGNOS reporting will relieve these pain points, offering the critical data needed for leadership decisions in a format tailored to the specific needs and interests of individual campus leaders. COGNOS reports will be designed to facilitate decision-making at various levels of leadership, including:

  • Campus-wide: Chancellor/Provost/Vice Chancellor of Planning and Budget
  • Organizational: Vice Chancellors and Deans
  • Organizational/Departmental: Chief Financial and Administrative Officers

The initial COGNOS reports will house the FY16-17 budgets under the New Budget Model and will be available in summer 2016. The majority of campus reports will be prioritized and validated through summer 2017, at which time the project will begin focusing on maturing the Report Lifecycle.
