New Student Information System – Banner

As UCR continues to grow, the need for a reliable, scalable, and flexible software system to manage student records has become readily apparent. In assessing the current Student Information System (SIS) and projecting future enrollment and needs, the project leadership team embarked on a series of consultations with stakeholders across campus. In these conversations, it became clear that students, staff, and faculty were feeling the effects of an antiquated SIS, and recognized that it was negatively impacting student success. Recognizing the centrality of student success to the mission of UCR, a campus-wide decision was made to procure UCR Banner to replace SIS. SIS will retire in October 2016 at which time UCR Banner will be utilized in admissions, billing, registration, and document management. UCR Banner is scheduled to go live for winter 2017 registration.

Story/Background

As UCR continues to grow, the need for a reliable, scalable, and flexible software system to manage student records has become readily apparent. For several years, UCR leadership has considered how best to address the issues with the current Student Information System (SIS) in a manner that will effectively service the growing campus.

In analyzing SIS and developing alternatives, the guiding principle has been to look at processes from every angle in order to improve efficiencies while maintaining a focus on the primary customer, students. Following this principle, the project leadership team embarked on a series of consultations with stakeholders across campus.

Implementation of Banner will directly address the major limitations of SIS. Efficiency gains of Banner include:

  • Improved self-service options, to include 24/7 access
  • Real-time access to Schedule of Classes during registration
  • Improved course planning
  • Improved course scheduling
  • Improved payment options, including Visa and Western Union and no fee for e-check
  • More Student Business Services processes will be online only, freeing staff time from data entry

SIS will retire in October 2016 at which time UCR Banner will be utilized in admissions, billing, registration, and document management. UCR Banner is scheduled to go live for winter 2017 registration. Financial Aid processes have used Banner since 2009.

Banner training for staff and advisors has begun and will continue through the summer. Training will be offered to students closer to the actual go-live date. In order for staff and students to familiarize themselves with the new system, Banner labs will be opened where they can receive hands-on training from Banner experts. Banner lab hours will be announced as the training schedule is finalized.
